Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä will perform Mozart’s Requiem, 21 August

Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä will perform W.A. Mozart’s Requiem in a Concert of National Church Gathering (Kirchentag) 2009, Friday 21st of August at Taulumäki Church, starting at 8 pm.

As a part of Jyväskylä parish’s summer concert series, Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä will perform W. A. Mozart’s Requiem, lead by conductor Vytautas Lukočius, the winner of the third Jorma Panula Conducting Competition. Singers of the solo quartet are Mia Huhta (soprano), Tiina-Maija Koskela (mezzo soprano), Tom Nyman (tenor) and Kirstjan Mõisnik (bass), with Chamber Choir Cantinovum (chorus master Rita Varonen).

The Lithuanian conductor, Vytautas Lukočius, became familiar to Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä from the 2006 Jorma Panula Conducting Competition in which Sinfonia Finlandia performed alongside Vaasa City Orchestra. In his homeland, Lukočius has studied piano and conducting and he has worked as chief assistant conductor in the National Symphony Orchestra of Lithuania. He has also studied at the Sibelius Academy in the years 1999-2002. Lukočius is a frequent visitor in Finnish orchestral circles, for example one might have seen him lead orchestras in Turku and Kotka.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was on his death bed, suffering from various illnesses when he was composing the Requiem. He was never able to finish the masterpiece himself and the task was left mainly to a student of Mozart, composer Franz Xaver Süssmayr who completed the masterpiece around 1791. Mozart was well aware of his physical condition and time to time he thought he was composing his own requiem. This brings a shadow from the beyond over the Requiem, and one can imagine Mozart working in cold, rainy Vienna, with a spectre of death hovering above him, constantly reminding what is to come…
