World veterans athletics indoor championships 2012 granted to Jyväskylä

The event will take place in Hippos Hall and some other venues in Jyväskylä on March 26 - 31, 2012. Approximately 3000 athletes from over 60 countries are expected to participate, and this makes the championships the most international sports event ever held in Jyväskylä.

The association World Masters Athletes has granted the 2012 world indoor championships to Jyväskylä. WMA's decision shows high regard for Finland's and Jyväskylä's competence on organising international sports events. The championships will be organised co-operatively by the local sport club Jyväskylän Kenttäurheilijat and the City of Jyväskylä.

Several veterans (masters) championships have been held in Jyväskylä during this decade. In 2000, the city hosted the European championships, in 2003 the Finnish championships, and in 2005 the Finnish indoor championships. This summer, the Finnish championships will take place in Jyväskylä again, and in 2010, the city will host the Nordic veterans indoor championships.
