World-famous dance artist Virpi Pahkinen performs with Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä

Virpi Pahkinen, who is considered to be Scandinavia´s most successful dance artist and choreographer, stages as soloist with Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä for two concerts in November.

Pahkinen and the orchestra perform two classical pieces together; Gunnar Idenstam´s Sepia Longa, aspectus brevis and Claude Debussy´s The Afternoon of Faun. Debussy´s piece is an arrangement for string orchestra, made by conductor Patrick Gallois whilst Risto Keinänen made the arrangement for Idenstam´s piece.

Virpi Pahkinen was born in Finland. Before starting her dancing career, Pahkinen studied classical music and piano at the Helsinki conservatory. Besides playing the piano, her hobby was figure skating. She trained to be a choreographer at the University College of Dance in Stockholm from 1989-1992. Pahkinen has toured over 30 different countries performing as a soloist. She has also choreographed for several famous dancers. Pahkinen has received many awards. In 2001, at the International Solo Dance Theatre Festival in Stuttgart, Pahkinen won the 1st Choreography Prize. Five years before that, she was awarded Finland´s Culture Prize for young artists.
