The final of the Jyväskylä Guitar Competition

Seventh Jyväskylä Guitar Competition in November

The final of the Jyväskylä Guitar Competition is being held on 5th of November at the Jyväskylä City Church. Participants come from conservatories, universities, polytechnics and music schools around Scandinavia and the Baltic countries.

The competition was held for the first time in 1986 and is planned to be held every three years. Central Finland´s conservatories foundation, Jyväskylä polytechnic and Jyväskylä´s city congregation are the organisers of the competition and is financially supported by the K.V Leino´s fund. The competitors play with Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä and the orchestra´s conductor for the competion is Jorma Panula.

Maestro Jorma Panula is also known as a composer and teacher of conducting. Panula studied church music and conducting at the Sibelius Academy. Later on he taught conductors like Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mikko Franck and Osmo Vänskä. During his long career, he has conducted the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Aarhus Symphony orchestra. Panula conducted his own composition, the opera “Jaakko Ilkka” that was performed at the Finnish National Opera.
