The Jyväskylä City Theatre is designed by the world famous architect Alvar Aalto. The theatre building was completed in 1982. The house features two stages: a main stage with 540 seats and a small stage with 93 seats. Annually the City Theatre produces approximately 260 performances including four premieres on the main stage and one or two premieres on the small stage. The number of personnel is 65.

Our aim is to offer as versatile theatre experiences as possible, and therefore we produce many co-productions as well as visiting performances representing the top notch Finnish theatre.

PETER PAN – A musical for all of us who don't want to grow up

Peter Pan the Musical tells the classic J. M. Barrie tale of the boy who doesn't want to grow up, the Darling children, Lost Boys and, of course, Captain Hook. The whole family can enjoy this fascinating fantasy set up on our main stage.

WHEN GRANDAD SKIED TO FINLAND – A joyful and musical family history

Daniel Katz's first novel tells the colorful story of his family, starting with his horn-playing soldier grandad Benno and his strong-willed grandma Wera. Klezmer music accompanies us on this journey from late 1800's in Finland, Europe and Jewish lifestyle.

BROKEN NEST – A new interpretation of the classic book done as a collaboration between eight theatres

A play based on the book trilogy Pesärikko by famous Finnish author Orvokki Autio. Young Armi falls in love with Olavi and moves to his home in the countryside of Southern Ostrobothnia. It's a story about men who can't handle their emotions, and about women who aren't afraid to make their own decisions. The play is produced as a collaboration between eight Finnish theatres and is premiered in Berlin in September 2017.

PIECES OF HAPPINESS – Stories of hope and happiness in the Finnish state of mind

A new Finnish musical play tells a story about two archangels who are sent to earth to look for happiness as the situation in earth seems very gloomy to heaven. They randomly choose a Finnish family as their subjects and follow their ups and downs in life. They hope to return to heaven with an answer to the eternal question: What is happiness? The play has music from Miljoonasade and Heikki Salo, performed by the actors.

DIARY OF A MADMAN – A tragic comedy of crisis

Iivari Arkadinpoika Putkonen is an excel wizard who is working long hours in a struggling company. He thinks he's about to fulfill his lifelong dream of being promoted, but instead finds himself in the middle of a strange chain of events. Why are the office machines talking? And what happened to his hair? This absurd comedy makes us wonder what is the worth of work, humanity, appreciation - and of course love.

LOSER - A survival story through years of being bullied in high school

Henrik is being bullied at school. He decides to survive, and tells his story through a monologue. One actor plays all the roles from Henrik to bullies and the prettiest girl in school.

We recommend buying tickets from the Ticket Office at the city theatre (address: Vapaudenkatu 36) as this enables to buy the tickets without a service fee.

You can reach us by phone at +358 14 266 0110.

The Ticket Office is open
from Monday to Friday from noon to 5 p.m.
(on nights of performance until 7 p.m.),
Saturdays from noon to 7 p.m.

Tickets can also be purchased from the internet at www.lippu.fi (a service fee will be added to the price of the ticket).
