Teachers from Yaroslavl art school get familiar with youth and culture in Jyväskylä

From 8 to 14 August, the City of Jyväskylä will receive cultural visitors from Yaroslavl, our Russian partner city, which is celebrating its 1000th anniversary. The visit of the teachers from art school no. 4 is part of the Cultural Centre’s Time Wheel project, which exchanges experiences in art education and explores cooperative possibilities in the field of youth culture.

Kilpinen and Christian schools will present their mosaic artworks

On Wednesday, 11 August at 8:30 a.m., the Russian artists participate in the art workshop together with the children of the Kangasvuori daycare centre, as well as a visit to the Kilpinen school on Thursday, 12 August at 10 a.m., during which the students of Kilpinen and Christian schools and the artists from Jyväskylä will present their mosaic artworks to the visitors from Yaroslavl.

Cultural exchange project called Time Wheel started last year

During the cultural exchange, which got its start last year, the Russian educators have been introduced to the Cultural Centre’s operating model, where professional artists work in schools in cooperation with the students and their teachers as part of their normal school day. This cooperation has resulted in an art installation designed by the youth and the professional artists, the first part of which is in Jyväskylä, while the second will be completed at the end of August in Yaroslavl.

My Hometown Through My Eyes art installation

The work, which is composed of mosaic and paintings, titled My Hometown Through My Eyes, was made by the 7th and 8th grade students of the Kilpinen school and the Christian School together with their teachers and four professional artists – Pertti Karjalainen, Panu Koskimies, Johanna Pisto and Tiina Lempiäinen. The children and artists from Yaroslavl will complete the work on a monument in the city. Both works also include a section describing the partner city. The project has given the artists involved an opportunity to create new contacts between the two cities.

The visiting programme organized by the City of Jyväskylä will also introduce the visitors from Yaroslavl to various cultural locations and activities both in the city and the province.
