The traditional Christmas season opening is celebrated on the 21.-23 of November 2014

A number of different events are available for all to enjoy. On Friday 21.11. over thirty street vendors from all over Finland will be offering seasonal products at the pedestrian street. Products available include canned goods, baked goods, cheeses, various meats, kalakukko (Finnish fish pasty), juice, fruit preserves and candy. Additionally, a wide selection of ideal Christmas gifts, such as clothes, accessories, furnishings, ceramics and handicraft are available for purchase. A number of parties operating in the city centre, including shopping centres, businesses and for example the Craft Museum of Finland will offer a wide selection of events during the weekend. This year Joulukylä Jyväskylä (Christmas Village Jyväskylä) will become more familiar through the Joulukylä Jyväskylä website. The website includes information on the various events ranging from carol-singing events to Christmas markets in the Jyväskylä region during the Christmas season.

The highlight of the opening ceremony is at the pedestrian street on Sunday 23.11 at 17-18. Father Christmas has promised to show up bringing his friends along and the Christmas star of the Compass Rose will be kindled. Moreover, Sokos department store has organized a fireworks display from the roof of Kolmikulma inviting people to the city centre to celebrate Christmas in Jyväskylä.
