Learning about public sector innovation in Jyväskylä

Italian experts from the Genova city administration visited the city of Jyväskylä during 21 – 22 August 2014. The visit was part of the ”Complex Challenges, Innovative Cities - CCIC” –project which aims to improve regional policies by enhancing innovation in the public sector and increasing collaboration between local and regional authorities, public entities and other stakeholders.

Jyväskylä’s best practices were presented for the Italian guests

Within the CCIC project best practices of public sector innovation have been identified in the 13 different partner cities across Europe. In Jyväskylä these include eg. the use of service voucher, participative city planning in the Kangas residential area as well as the Huhtasuo school and day care centre which was realized with public private partnership. Jyväskylä’s best practices were presented for the Italian guests and they raised a lot of discussion.

Public sector shares same kind of challenges Europe-wide

“The benefits of the CCIC project for us have been various,” says Laura Ahonen, Project Manager. “First of all, the experience and knowhow gained from international cooperation is indispensable for the city. Despite the organizational differences the public sector shares same kind of challenges Europe-wide. It is important that we also share the solutions. For example, most of the major European cities wish to become ’smart’, but the solutions vary quite a lot from Birmingham, UK, to Catania, Italy. Also Jyväskylä wishes to develop to a smart city. Secondly, we are also keen on presenting our best practices for our partners. It is not only for sharing our experience - at the same time it provides us a chance to examine our own practices from a different angle. “

The CCIC project is a three-year project funded under the European Comission’s INTERREG IVC-programme.
