Representatives of Jyväskylä's twin cities visit the Housing Fair

Guests from Eskilstuna in Sweden, Fjarðabyggð in Iceland, Potsdam in Germany, Yaroslavl in Russia and Tartu Parish in Estonia visited the Jyväskylä Housing Fair from 22 to 24 July 2014. The group of 15 visitors consisted of elected officials, civil servants, land use specialists and members of friendship associations, among others.

Interior decor, construction methods and techniques raised interest

The guests visited the Housing Fair on 23 July and held a twin city seminar on 24 July at the Jyväskylä City Hall. At the Housing Fair, Pasi Heiskanen, CEO of the Finnish Housing Fair Corporation, presented the overall concept. The guests also visited the homes on display and exhibition halls at the fair. In addition to the homes and their interior decor, construction methods and techniques also raised great interest.

Exchange of views of developing housing and resource wise cities

In the twin city seminar at the Jyväskylä City Hall, Mayor Markku Andersson welcomed the guests and spoke about the years of cooperation with each twin city. The representatives of the twin cities also exchanged views of developing urban housing and land use. Director of Urban planning project Ms. Anne Sandelin talked about what is happening in Jyväskylä in the area of land use planning and new housing visions. Leading specialist Mr. Lari Rajantie of the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra presented the “Towards resource wisdom” project jointly run by Sitra and the City of Jyväskylä.

Visit to the Säynätsalo town hall

The guests were also given the opportunity to take a tour of the old Kangas industrial district and hear about interesting aspects of Jyväskylä's industrial history. The programme included a cruise on lake Päijänne, sauna at Juurikkasaari festivity hall and a visit to the Säynätsalo town hall, which is one of architect Alvar Aalto's most significant works.
