Job shadowers from Jyväskylä’s Swedish twin city Eskilstuna in Jyväskylä 21.-26.4.2014

Math teachers Anne Nordström and Catrin Wahlström visited Palokka School on 22-25 April as they participated in a job shadowing programme of Eskilstuna. They followed math and special education in Finnish on all the grades 1-9.

“The week was very fruitful for me as well because we compared the Finnish and Swedish school systems a lot. It seems that during one lesson we teach maths more as a school subject whereas in Sweden they may deal with interpersonal matters, too. Also, we proceed further in mathematics: for example, we teach trigonometry on the ninth grade already but they have it in the upper secondary school”, says host math teacher Päivi Manninen of Palokka School.

A lot of Finnish Swedes live in Eskilstuna and therefore Eskilstuna is called the most Finnish municipality in Sweden. Eskilstuna is one of the municipalities of Finnish-language administrative regions. Eskilstuna is the oldest twin city of Jyväskylä, the connection was already born in year 1947.
