Lighting artists chosen for upcoming Nordic Light event in Tartu, Estonia

The networking and expo event for light artists to be held in the Estonian city of Tartu on May 9th attracted applications from 63 light artists by close of call.

On the basis of the applications the expert jury, consisting of representatives of the City of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä Art Museum, the Central Finland district of Pohjola-Norden - The Norden Association, Stockholm Konst and Stockholm County Council decided to choose 21 artists, who will enjoy an opportunity to exhibit their works at the event.

– The artists chosen include big names from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Estonia. The Finnish participants are Ainu Palmu (Helsinki), Kari Kola (Joensuu), Tarja Ervasti (Fiskars) and William Dennisuk (Imatra), reveals Elli Räsänen, Coordinator of Jyväskylä’s City of Light project which leads the Nordic Light project. In her view the Nordic Light project is aimed at opening the door to Europe for Nordic lighting artists.

Knowledge, expertise and networking

The 21 deserving artists selected for the event will each show their own portfolio in Tartu on May 9th. The event will include a panel discussion, intriguingly titled The Meaning of Light, an introduction to the themes of which will be provided by the Estonian lighting designer Priit Tiimus, known among other things as the organiser of the Tallinn Light Biennale light festival.

Examples of Nordic lighting art will be on show as part of the international Light in the City lighting branch conference to be held in Tartu from May 7th-9th. The programme also includes practice-oriented workshops, a Guerrilla Lighting happening and a guided tour of the city’s illuminated locations. The unifying goal of these activities is to promote the principles of sustainable development in the way outdoor lighting is organised and to create opportunities for participating municipal decision-makers, lighting branch professionals and actors in other fields to become networked.

The conference in Tartu is an opportunity to update and refresh thinking, ideas and visions of lighting design. It is an opportunity to get together and have some fun with positive, enlightened people. Tartu offers a package which allows you to understand where the lighting industry is going and possibly find new ideas, – suggests the conference’s keynote speaker on May 8th, the Finnish lighting designer Roope Siiroinen.
