Instrumental wizards and fine composers on offer during Jyväskylä Sinfonia’s autumn season

During Jyväskylä Sinfonia’s autumn season the audience has once again an opportunity to enjoy a rich amount of guest conductors. At the same time, preparations for new chief con-ductor Ville Matvejeff’s period, which will start in the beginning of 2014, are underway. The audience can meet Matvejeff already in December when he conducts the concert during Finnish music week. Moshe Atzmon’s first concert as principal guest conductor will be during next spring.

There will be a significant change in the staff of the orchestra as intendant Lasse Allonen retires after 40 years’ career. His farewell concert is together with the season opening concert in September with conductor William Boughton and violinist Pekka Kuusisto. The program includes, for instance, Peteris Vasks’ violin concerto, Sibelius, and Pekka Kostiainen’s new piece.

Four conductors from Great Britain

No less than four conductors from Great Britain will conduct in Jyväskylä in the autumn. In addition to Boughton, we will meet female conductor Sian Edwards who has conducted sev-eral of world’s best orchestras, Welsh maestro Alun Francis, and younger generation’s James Lowe who gets constantly fantastic reviews around the world. Also Patrick Gallois visits Jyväskylä again conducting the premiere of Kai Nieminen’s first symphony.

Masterful soloists and a concert full of recorded music

Guest soloists in the autumn are masters of different instruments. Cellist Marko Ylönen interprets in October one of the greatest cello concertos, Saint-Saëns’ demanding first concerto for cello. Polish pianist Marek Bracha has been awarded in highly esteemed Chopin piano competitions and plays his fellow citizen’s piano concerto. One of Finland’s top violinists Elina Vähälä plays Max Bruch’s lovely violin concerto in November. Also in November piano artist Matti Raekallio, who works as a professor in The Juilliard School in New York, visits Jyväskylä.

During the last 10 years, Jyväskylä Sinfonia has released two cds in a year. Now it is time to give well-earned attention to this work and play a whole concert full of recorded music. The soloist is orchestra’s French flutist Alexis Roman, who interprets one of his favourite pieces, Jacques Ibert’s concerto for flute.

Three concerts in Taulumäki Church

There will be three concerts in Taulumäki Church in the autumn and the first one is already in the middle of September. The soloist in this concert is Finland’s perhaps most internationally famous and respected organ artist Kalevi Kiviniemi. His masterful style can be admired in two French compositions – Alexandre Guilmant’s and Charles-Marie Widor’s organ pieces. Johannes Brahms’ seldom heard and beloved church music composition A German Requiem will be performed in All Saints’ Day concert. Both of the soloists – Kaisa Ranta and Aarne Pelkonen – have won Lappeenranta’s international vocal competitions. Christmas concert is this year traditional with soprano Sirkka Lampimäki and Christmas carols. Also the theme from the animation The Snowman, O Holy Night, and Arcangelo Corelli’s Christmas Concerto will be heard.

Popular Chaplin concert and Paula Koivuniemi’s concert will be replayed

Chaplin movie concert won last autumn such popularity with the audience that it will be replayed in November. This time the movie is called The Circus and as previously, it is accompanied on live music. Kimmo Tullila who has specialized in conducting Chaplin movie con-certs will be orchestra’s conductor then.

A couple of years ago, the pop queen Paula Koivuniemi visited as orchestra’s soloist with a huge success. Now, she is coming again in Jyväskylä with top conductor Mikko Franck. Paula who is one of Franck’s favourite artists, sings in the concert in Jyväskylä Paviljonki several of her hits arranged for a symphony orchestra.

City Hall of Jyväskylä and Palokka’s school center serve as new concert venues

A string quartette gathered of Jyväskylä Sinfonia’s players performs twice in the autumn. In October, the concert full of romantic string quartetti will be heard in the City Hall of Jyväskylä, which has been renovated thoroughly, and in November in Palokka’s new school center. The concert in Palokka is also a coffee concert, so the music can be enjoyed together with coffee and pastries.
