City Council
In Finland local self-government is guaranteed by the constitution. The City Council is elected for four years in direct proportional elections by the residents of the city. The number of the councilors in the Jyväskylä City Council is 75 and they represent eight different parties. The council is the highest authority and responsible for the most important decisions in the city such as the decision for the city budget. The Council also decides on the municipal income tax as well as the real estate tax rates.

The council meetings are held at the City Library (address: Vapaudenkatu 39-41), and they are open to public. The Council meetings will take place on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. in the city library's Minnansali room.

The notice of meeting and the agenda will be published on the official bulletin board of the City of Jyväskylä and on the City's website. The time and place of the meetings will be announced in the Keskisuomalainen newspaper, as well as at all city libraries and municipal service points.
The confirmed minutes will be publicly displayed at the Hannikainen Service Point in the Rakentajantalo building (address: Hannikaisenkatu 17, 1st floor)
City Board
The city board is responsible for the practical running of local administration and its finances. It prepares issues that come before the council and functions as its representative. The 15 members of the Jyväskylä city board are chosen by the council for four years.

City Board meetings
The City Board has meetings every Monday except during general holiday seasons. The meetings are not open to the public.

Municipal Committees
Municipal committees are chosen by the city council among those persons in the municipality that are eligible. The municipal committees in the city of Jyväskylä take care of the tasks related to the following fields: education, culture and youth, sports, social- and health care, building and environment, city planning, auditing, Central Finland emergency services, elections and Säynätsalo district.
Mayor
Subject to the city board, the municipal manager is in charge of managing the operations of the city. He is elected by the council for a fixed term or indefinitely.
