Jyväskylä consolidates its position as a winter sports city by hosting the Red Bull Crashed Ice races in 2018–2020

Jyväskylä City has signed a three-year contract with the Red Bull Crashed Ice series extending to 2020. It will offer Finnish downhill ice cross fans the opportunity to witness this tough sport first hand. The event will consolidate Jyväskylä’s position among the legendary winter sports cities and give it welcome international visibility. The Red Bull Crashed Ice events are shown live in more than ten countries and the races attract tens of millions of viewers across the world.

“We’re proud to host a high-standard international downhill ice cross competition and at the same time uphold Jyväskylä’s position as Finland’s sports capital that offers events round the year,” says Jyväskylä City Mayor Timo Koivisto.

The classic of the downhill ice cross circuit adopts a new concept to offer more entertainment

The track, which will be over 600 metres, will be built at Laajavuori ski centre in Jyväskylä and will be the longest and most demanding of the whole circuit. At the same time, it will be the only track made of natural ice, and its length and the vertical drop of over 60 metres will guarantee a number of surprises during the course of the race. The Jyväskylä competition has earned its classic status in the calendar and become one of the favourite events with competitors. Added flavour will be provided by the fact that the Jyväskylä Red Bull Crashed Ice race will now, for the first time, be held during the day. This makes the Jyväskylä event stand out from the rest, underlining the exoticism of Finnish winter.

More entertainment is in the offing for the spectators, as the event will be compressed into a one-day happening with the men’s, women’s and junior finals all raced on the same day. Additionally, music will play an important part, featuring performers such as Ruudolf, Musta Barbaari, Prinssi Jusuf, Seksikäs-Suklaa, Dosdela and VG+. A single ticket will give access to an international sports event as well as a concert by Finland’s top artists. The doors will open at 11.00 a.m.

Finland a forerunner in downhill ice cross

Now in for its 18th season, downhill ice cross has developed hugely as a sport. Arttu Pihlainen, President of the Finnish Skate Cross Association (www.fsxa.fi) and two-time world champion, is extremely pleased with the three-year contract and sees Finland as one of the leading countries in the sport.

“Downhill ice cross is growing in Finland and elsewhere. The junior competition will lower the threshold for participation and bring more young people into training. I believe we can expect Finns to put in a fine performance. We’ll have more skaters than ever before, and it’s easy to see that the sport is gaining in popularity. Another thing that will contribute to this trend is the Finnish championships. It’s great to have a follow-up to the Red Bull race because there is a lot of activity going on in Jyväskylä. The city has done a lot to promote the sport, which has made it a sort of pioneer in this respect. We’ll see a large number of first-rate skaters.”

Tickets to the Finnish leg of the circuit are available at www.lippu.fi/rbci. Regular tickets are EUR 15 and concession ticket EUR 10.
